SUPA IGA Lowood director and Fruit and Veg department supervisor Mark Whitten certainly knows his onions from his cabbages. He first started with Coles in Sydney at the age of 15 and went on to become a deputy manager and fruit and veg buyer, before joining the family business in 1987. Needless to say, quality and freshness at the right price is paramount at SUPA IGA Lowood. They have total control over the quality of fresh produce and can offer Australian fruit and veg at the best possible prices. Ask Mark for advice about anything fruit and veg related and his enthusiasm and expertise really shows. So what’s fresh in Fruit and Veg this week, Mark? “Apples - No changes on the humble winter staple. Bananas to remain steady. Strawberries- Good supply with prices to possibly ease next week - stay tuned. Citrus - Hickson’s are finished now, so we will be supplying Murcotts exclusively. Grapes - All Aussie grapes are now finished, USA Whites, Reds and Black seedless are available. Prices are exy but the fruit is very good. Cherries - With about 3 weeks to go supply should start decrease and prices will rise. Melons - Rockies and Honeydews will remain firm, with the quality being excellent. Tropical - Paw Paw and pineapples will remain steady. Lettuce - Supplies a little light due to the poor weather of 2 month ago. Broccoli - We should not see prices change to much next week, as supply is a little more consistent. Beans - we should see come back a little late next week. Cauliflower - Plenty of Caulies around prices will remain steady. Tomatoes - Larger fruit has been exceptional with the price difference between the two only a few dollars.” Can you suggest a good recipe, Mark? “How about baked Gold sweet potato? Cut into ¼ inch slices and bake with butter and fresh herbs in a shallow baking dish for 30 minutes at 180° C. Or chipped Zucchini baked with sliced onions, diced tomatoes and 2 tablespoons of Oyster sauce in a saucepan, stirring through for 5-10 minutes and serve with beef or chicken.” YUM! |
